A career pathway for Artisans in Textile Design & Finishing Treatments. Maine has always had a rich art heritage and history of fine handmade crafts. The Textile and Surface Design program at Heartwood College is a career path for artisans who work in fiber, clay, metal, wood and paper. This exciting course of study will train students as surface designers in textiles, wall and floor treatments, furniture painting, and accessories for the domestic interior industry.

This newly offered program may be pursued as either a 48 core credit diploma in Surface Design or a 60 credit AA degree. Courses may be taken independently as long as the prerequisites are met, and is designed to develop creative thinkers with an awareness of contemporary surface treatments, expertise and a professional practice. These skills will equip artists to compete in the "Industry".

Areas of study include:
Textile repeats for silkscreen, block printing, dye methods, photo transfer, paste paper, weaving, felting, handmade clay tiles, rolled and etched metal for functional utensils, mosaics, faux painting on walls and furniture, architectural rendering for interiors, botanical illustration, floor cloths, marbling and murals.

Heartwood College of Art is a small private non-profit college in Southern Maine offering an Associate, a BFA and a low residency MFA. Heartwood has been striving to educate the next generation of artists for almost 20 years. The college has built an impressive faculty of working artists and course of study for a wide demographic. Our advisory board includes professionals with expertise in the fields of surface treatments, interior design, custom tiling and contemporary furniture.

The Surface Design program at Heartwood provides a trade component in the arts, consolidating a mastery of fine art and craft into on career pathway.

The New Brunswick College of Art and Design in Canada is an academic partner, affording a worldly perspective for our students. Students will be able to study and immerse themselves in courses and culture in New Brunswick for part of their coursework.

4 courses @ 3 credits each = 12 credits/semester

SEMESTER 1:

History of Design
Drawing I (rendering concepts, natural forms)
Color and Design I
Surface Design I: Design Mechanicals: Seamless repeat, stencils, grids, scale


SEMESTER 2:

Drawing II (Architectural drawing, interior and exterior)
Applied Color and Design (palettes and chords for the industry)
Studio (Paper, Book Arts, Gift Wrap, Wall Paper)
Surface Design II (Textiles) silkscreen, block printing, dye methods


SEMESTER 3:

Exploration of Crafts or Botanical Illustration
Studio (Computer, Interior Design trends)
3D Design (mold making, casting)
Surface Design III (wood, walls, floors)


SEMESTER 4:

Biz Promo and Design
Studio (Installation)
Surface Design IV (Clay and Metals)
Studio Concentration

3 credits each course
12 credits x $400 = $ 4,800 per semester
48 credits x $400 = $19,200 total tuition

Cash Back (a reverse scholarship) 5% back upon graduation in good standing

12 credits of academic credits may be transferred in for the AA degree
