Heartwood to Host Maine 2011 Scholastic Art Awards
Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk is pleased to announce that we will again be hosting the Maine Regional Scholastic Art Awards for 2011 for all Maine high school and middle school students.
Teachers were sent packets of information on the 2011 Scholastic Art Awards as well as information about Heartwood College's AA, BFA and MFA degree programs. If you did not receive the packet or would like another one, please call 985-0985 or email us at www.hca@HeartwoodCollegeofArt.org and we will send one out to you. You can also get all the information on our website at HeartwoodCollegeofArt.org.
Register Right Away: As of September 15, 2010, students and teachers can register online: www.artandwriting.org. We urge teachers and students to register now even if the student artwork is not completed. This avoids a bottleneck of registration at the December 8th deadline. You can add/edit work anytime online up until the deadline.
Go to www.artandwriting.org for details on how to register and for submission guidelines.
TEACHERS: PLEASE REGISTER at www.artandwriting.org If you have a network, association or organization of other Art Educators, feel free to forward this information and encourage them to contact us to be added to our email list. We are trying to keep our list current to keep info flowing and mailing costs down.
Quick Guidelines: Below are some quick guidelines that will help you and your students. (More details online at: www.artandwriting.org)
1. Open to all students, grades 7-12. Two categories: Group I is for grades 7-8 and Group II is for grades 9-12. Portfolios are for seniors only.
2. There is no limit to the number of students entering from each school. We do, however, rely on teachers to select only top pieces that truly exemplify the criteria for the categories. There are new categories added this year.
3. ONLINE: Students must complete the registration process and download images of art pieces by 4:00PM, Wednesday, December 8th, 2010, at the Scholastic website. We STRONGLY URGE students and teachers to register well before the deadline as you will need to mail a signed copy (parent, student & teacher signatures required) of your submission/registration form to Heartwood.
SNAIL MAIL: Fees and completed/signed hardcopies of the submission form must be received at Heartwood College of Art, 123 York Street, Kennebunk, Maine 04043 by 4:00PM, Wednesday, December 8th, 2010, so that HCA can confirm that all requirements have been met on each submission and the piece can then be included in the judging.
4. Because the judging is done from the digital image of the piece, it is crucial that the image is sized, labeled and saved as specifically described in the submission guidelines given online. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have questions please consult your school’s tech person or call Marcia at HCA, 985-0985.
5. Fees for submissions are $5.00 per individual piece and $20 for portfolios. This was the minimum amount suggested by Scholastic to help cover some of the regional affiliate's registration costs. Letters for fee waivers must be on school letterhead and qualifications for individuals are in the submission guidelines online.
6. NEW THIS YEAR – Submissions of the digital images must be downloaded on the Scholastic registration site. There will be no need to send CDs through the mail. Heartwood can access the images from the Scholastic website for adjudication once the submissions are complete.
7. Each submission should be completed as required in the directions online.
TEACHERS: Because the process is now done mostly online, we have been able to save the students, schools and teachers money and/or time. The only items to mail are the fee, one hardcopy of the completed and signed submission form and any "permission to use photo" form if required.
Note: PORTFOLIOS have more requirements that also must be mailed to Heartwood. See Portfolio Guidelines at www.artandwriting.org.
The fee can be sent as one check to cover all of your students' submissions or as individual checks. Either way, checks should be payable to: Heartwood College of Art and be sure that the money is clearly marked as to who is covered. An accurate checklist of your students, their work titles and category, accompanying the fees REALLY would be MUCH appreciated. You may collect and send the paperwork for all your students together in one envelope except Portfolio submissions. These should be sent separately.
