Heartwood to Host the Maine 2009 Scholastic Art Awards
November, 2008 - Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk is pleased to announce that the College has been chosen by The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers to be the Maine affiliate for the 2009 Scholastic Art Awards. This year, the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards celebrates their 85th year of encouraging the next generation of artists through recognition of their work at the regional and national levels. As the Maine affiliate, Heartwood will serve as the host for the state's Scholastic Art Awards. This process begins with receiving all art work submitted by high school and junior high students throughout the state. Heartwood will then coordinate the jurying of those submissions for awards at the Gold, Silver and Bronze levels of achievement.
Artwork will be classified according to media. The judges will view each entry individually and do know know which school's artwork or student is being evaluated. The judging panel will use the following criteria to evaluate artwork for awards: originality, good craftsmanship, emergence of a personal vision, and overall artistic significance.
The Jury Committee for the adjudication of the Awards will be comprised of Heartwood's most esteemed faculty. They have not only taught Foundation and Studio classes at a college level for many years, but are working artists in their field. These years of professionalism offer expertise knowledge in mediums including oil painting, pastel, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry and photography. Their ability to constructively evaluate pieces based on individual merit will be a coordinated effort and an invaluable component to the process of defining "the next generation of artists" in Maine.
Finally, the College will recognize the Maine award winners at a show of the award winning work and a grand reception. The opening will be held on Saturday February 7, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Heartwood Galleries. This will be followed by a reception for students and parents at the Coastal House (located nearby on Rt. 1 in Wells). Light refreshments will be served from 1:00-2:00pm and the awards ceremony will follow from 2:00-3:00pm. Tickets are still available and are $8 at the door.
