Origin of Our Name

Heartwood’s name is derived from the center of the tree, from where all growth and life of the tree begins and is fed.  The center of the human being, the heart, which is analogous to the tree, as the heart is the beginning and feeding of an artist .  Heartwood’s motto, the adaptation of St. Francis’ quote, is the essence of the Heartwood philosophy.

Our Location

HCA is located on U.S. Route 1 in Kennebunk, Maine, about one mile south of the business community.  The College is ideally located within 4 miles of the Atlantic Ocean.  Easy access to Boston, northern Maine, and other New England states provides students with opportunities to expand personal and professional knowledge of art.  Ample shopping is available close by in Biddeford, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  In addition, the location of the college equidistant from Portland and Portsmouth enables students and faculty to take advantage of the many cultural and recreational activities of the area.
