Academic Services

Orientation and Registration

Heartwood’s school community is small. Our orientation gathering brings all students together with the faculty and administration.  Each student is given assistance with registration and guidance throughout their Heartwood career.

Academic Advising

The Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, in conjunction with Department Chairs and College Faculty, is responsible for advising students concerning degree requirements, electives, and continuing education.  The Dean’s Office monitors a student’s progress throughout enrollment at HCA and develops, in writing, a plan of study for each full-time student.  Students should meet with the Dean at least once a semester to jointly monitor degree progress

 Apprenticeships and Internships

Students wishing to complete an internship and/or apprenticeship have a variety of opportunities available.  The Executive Assistant to the President works with students to arrange placement.  Tuition for internships and apprenticeships is billed at the current credit hour charge.  Apprenticeships and internships must be arranged and approved in advance with the Executive Assistant to the President.

Course Syllabus
Each course will have a syllabus that is presented during the first class meeting.  Students should read the syllabus thoroughly and meet with faculty during the first week of classes if questions arise regarding student outcomes, grading, and course policies.
 Student Evaluation

Each semester, students receive written faculty assessments and numerical grades which are included in their permanent records.  Each spring, students submit their year’s studio work for a portfolio review and written critique. Both written assessments and critiques are part of the student’s record.

Tutoring

Individual tutoring is not a direct service of HCA.  However, HCA may be able to provide guidance to locate tutoring.  Additionally, students may ask fellow classmates for assistance or may for study groups to accomplish course learning outcomes.
